HPOWER generates seven percent of Oahu’s electricity, helping Oahu achieve its goal of becoming more energy self-sufficient.

By generating this clean power from a renewable resource, HPOWER helps diversify our island’s fuel portfolio and helps provide stability for electricity prices.

HPOWER saves the equivalent of 800,000 barrels of oil each year. That means HPOWER has already saved more than 10 million barrels of imported oil since its start of operation.

HPOWER was built to reduce the need for landfills.

The facility reduces the volume of waste by 90 percent, saving hundreds of acres of landfill space.

Without HPOWER, metals such as aluminum and steel that are thrown away in the trash would simply be buried in a landfill.

Instead, 20,000 tons—or 40 million pounds—of metals are recycled each year at HPOWER.

The remaining ash hardens, similar to concrete, and stays that way. Testing required by federal and state regulatory agencies consistently demonstrates that the ash is safe and poses no threat to the environment.

Possible beneficial uses for ash are currently being researched and evaluated. Led by the City and County of Honolulu, one such study is currently underway at the HPOWER facility where ash is being tested as a road aggregate.

HPOWER employs modern equipment to clean exhaust gas in compliance with strict environmental regulations. Emission data is monitored continuously and routinely provided to regulators.

HPOWER successfully meets hundreds of local, state and federal regulations designed to protect the environment and its employees each day.
